One of the most important parts of SEO is being listed in the major directories. Alexa is one of the major directories in which you need to be listed.
If you’ve never heard of Alexa before, it’s a website, owned by Amazon, which helps website owners to know their “true place on the web”. Every site on the web is given an Alexa Ranking, 1 being the highest Alexa ranking a website can achieve. These Alexa rankings are essentially a ranking of the amount of traffic that a website receives, so a 1 ranking means the busiest site on the internet, a 2 ranking is the second busiest site, etc.
All of this ranking is done through a toolbar, which is installed by millions of visitors around the world, and as each visitor using that toolbar visits your site, the toolbar reports home to Alexa that they have visited, and that helps determine your ranking.

This is Alexa’s way of knowing that you are the owner of the site, and with a free membership through this link. Millions of users use the site to find related sites, so taking 5 minutes to verify your information with them is important.
The first thing you will need to to is verify that you are the owner of your site. Alexa will ask you to enter your URL, and then present you with a verification code. Simply copy that code into your site’s header and follow the online instructions.
Next, you’ll be asked to update your site information. You’ll see a screen that looks similar to this (click the image to enlarge):
Simply enter your information, click the blue button and you’re done.
Some WordPress plugins, like the “WordPress SEO by Yoast” plugin will help you to enter the information in your header so that there is no need to have your web designer do this for you.
